Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists are part of a multi-disciplinary team working across all areas of the hospice, including the Inpatient Unit, Day Hospice and out in the community.
Much of their work is assessing and treating patients' mobility problems with the aim of restoring as high a level of independence as possible. This may mean introducing people to walking frames or electric wheelchairs.
Physiotherapy can help enhance patients' quality of life by promoting comfort with passive movements, positioning, splints, collars, suitable seating and beds. Massage, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques can also help to alleviate anxiety, breathlessness and pain.
For patients suffering from lymphoedema, they use compression bandaging, hosiery, skin care, massage and exercise. More information on lymphoedema is available from the British Lymphology Society for professionals and the Lymphoedema Support Network for patients.
There is also an information leaflet "Physiotherapy, Oncology, and Palliative Care" produced by the Association of Physiotherapists in Oncology and Palliative Care. For more information, e-mail Diane Robinson.
