Brentwood and Ongar MP volunteers at Hospice shop

Customers visiting our newest Brentwood shop were greeted by a new volunteer - Brentwood and Ongar MP, Eric Pickles.

The elected representative helped to sort donations, prepare the shop floor and worked on the till at our clothing and bric-a-brac store in Brentwood High Street on Friday 11th November.

Mr. Pickles, who last year was also named Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said: "Saint Francis is a well liked, well loved and well appreciated local Hospice. You can’t be in the town for long without meeting someone whose life has been touched by their work. It’s good to support a fellowship that has such a strong presence in the community.”

Volunteer Hannah Cook, 17, a student at the Brentwood Ursuline High School, joined Mr. Pickles on her first day of voluntary work at the shop. Like many other young volunteers, Hannah hopes to gain professional experience and personal confidence from her time there.

Showing both Hannah and Mr. Pickles the ropes was volunteer Gayle Sergeant, who praised Mr. Pickles’ enthusiasm: “The customers loved having him there and so did we. He told us to keep up the good work and his visit will help keep staff morale high.”

Steve Rose, General Manager of Saint Francis (Shops) Ltd, said: "The volunteers at the shops are vital to making them successful, so it’s fantastic that all their hard work is being recognised. But even if people don’t have the time to volunteer, it’s donations that keep us going. Mr Pickles support will hopefully help us recruit volunteers and donations, both of which are much needed."

Money raised from our shops goes towards providing care and support for people affected by life-limiting illness living in Brentwood, Havering, Barking & Dagenham and Redbridge.
