Bridge club deals out £1,000 for patient care

A bridge club has come up trumps for the Hospice by raising £1,000 through a competition.

Harold Wood Bridge Club held its annual Charity Pairs Event for us on September 24th and 88 people took part, including Havering Mayor Councillor Melvin Wallace and his wife Joan and John McKernan, Chairman of the Hospice Shops Company.

The money was raised through entry fees and a raffle and the bridge club’s Chairman Mike Wood presented a cheque for £1,000 to Councillor Wallace, who has chosen to support the hospice as his main charity of the year.

John McKernan, who shared some thoughts from patients and relatives about what the hospice meant to them at the event at Harold Wood Neighbourhood Centre, said: “It was an enjoyable evening and I would like to thank Harold Wood Bridge Club for their generous donation. The £1,000 could help pay for three patients to attend the day hospice where they can benefit from talking to nurses, doctors and other patients, have complementary therapy or physiotherapy if they need it and access other services.

“To date the club has raised more than £9,600 to help the hospice care for local people affected by life-limiting illness and I would like to thank them for their continued support.”

Mike Wood said “The event went well and it was good to see so many people supporting us and Saint Francis Hospice.”
