'Donate a Day' to Saint Francis Hospice

Saint Francis Hospice is asking the community to join their ‘Donate a Day’ appeal.

The hospice has been selected as The Liberty Shopping Centre’s charity of the year, and as a result, they will have a regular stand in the shopping centre in Romford.

It is hoped that new volunteers could donate some time – from half a day to a week or more – to spend at the stand, promoting upcoming events or collecting donations from passers-by.

Marketing manager Esther Wakeman said: “We are thrilled that we are able to have a stand in The Liberty Shopping Centre at periods throughout the year, but we need some help from the community. We think it would be really special for you to offer your time to help others, simply by joining in with ‘Donate a Day’ and manning our stand for us.”

Esther continued: “Working on the stand promises to be really fun, as you can interact with the public while helping your local charity. Full training will be provided to the volunteers beforehand.”

The charity currently has a team of over 800 volunteers, working a total of 145,000 hours per annum, and saving the hospice over £2 million a year in costs. Whether the volunteers are hairdressers, drivers who bring patients to the hospice or those who hand out the meals on the ward, they are all an essential part of ensuring that the hospice helps 4,000 people a year with a life limiting illness.

Lorraine Doran has volunteered for the fundraising department for18 months. She said: “I love volunteering because personally it makes me feel good knowing I’ve given something of myself to help other people. I would encourage any one to give it a go, it’s excellent way for people who want to do something, albeit only a few hours a week, as it all makes a huge difference.”

David Collins, General Manager of The Liberty Shopping Centre said: “We have selected St Francis Hospice as our charity of the year as their work touches so many people’s lives within our community, from patients to family and friends. We are delighted to be able to offer them with an environment to fundraise and support the ‘Donate a Day’ initiative which provides an opportunity for members of the community to become involved and support this worthy cause”.

If you are interested in donating a day, please email volunteer@sfh.org.uk with your contact details, or call Kathy on 01708 771404.
