Family have muddy great time at their hospice fundraiser

A family showed they were no sticks in the mud as they joined a team of 10 in the Maldon Mud Race and raised money for Saint Francis Hospice, which is a charity close to their hearts.

Garry Trapp, from Upminster, and his wife Jackie, daughter Emma and oldest son Will, competed in the 500 yard mud race across the cold River Blackwater at low tide in April.

Garry, who was also joined by friends, said: “It was a great, but exceedingly muddy day. It was hard work going through the heavy mud, but we all had a great laugh and more importantly raised money for the hospice in the process.”

The team decided to raise money for the hospice because Garry’s mother-in-law Bernadette Humphreys, from Cranham, spent nearly three weeks in the inpatient unit before she sadly died of cancer last October.

Garry said: “The care Bernadette received was superb. She was well looked after, made to feel comfortable and was treated with dignity. Our family could visit when we wanted, which was appreciated as it meant Bernadette never had to be alone.”

The family have raised more than £1,300 for the hospice by taking part in their first mud race and are now considering their next fundraising challenge.
