First lottery draw - Nicola is a winner!

A good cause makes Nicola Stananought £1,000 better off!

When Nicola Stananought of Blackmore purchased her £1 lottery ticket, she never dreamed she would be the first ever winner of the Saint Francis Hospice Lottery.  The inaugural draw took place on the 7th October 2011.

Nicola spent years as a District Nurse in Havering before joining the hospice team. “I was so shocked – I signed up for the Lottery because it’s a fun way to support such a great cause. I never dreamed I would ever win, let alone in the first week!  My daughter Amy has just started school, we’d like to use our winnings to have a relaxing holiday during half term. It’s lovely to be able to have this unexpected treat!”

Hospice Medical Director, Corinna Midgely added, “I’m thrilled for Nicola, not only does she work very hard for the hospice, she also supports the lottery and lots of other fundraising incentives.  Many of our staff have opted to play the lottery, it’s a great way to raise much needed additional funds and at the same time have some fun.”

Second prize was not won and will rollover to next week's draw.

Third prize was ten winners of £10 and one lucky player from Brentwood won a special bonus prize of a Fortnum & Mason’s Hamper worth £500.

Mrs Anita Wilson of Hutton has supported the hospice since 2003 after her brother was cared for by Saint Francis Hospice.   “I’m thrilled with my prize, what a luxury! I look forward to receiving the hamper in time for Christmas, it is such a nice surprise to have won such an amazing prize. The hospice holds a special place in my heart so when I signed up for the lottery I wasn’t really thinking about what I could win. I’ll definitely be encouraging friends and family to play the lottery to support such a worthy local cause.”

Over 2,000 players signed up for the first ever lottery paying £1 for a ticket.  Maria Tillett-Hayes, Lottery Manager at the Hospice comments, “We have been amazed at the support received in the first week of our Lottery. Around half of the people who joined the lottery this week signed up for a whole year, which is fantastic. £52 could cover the cost of a home visit from one of our nurses to a patient with a life limiting illness. The extra money the lottery generates will allow us to help more patients.”

The Saint Francis Hospice lottery gives participants the chance to win £1,000 each week, as well as the chance to win a £25,000 rollover prize – all for a £1 weekly donation. The odds of winning the hospice lottery are significantly higher than any national lottery and the money raised is spent helping local people.

It costs £7.2 million a year to run the Hospice, which provides a variety of services throughout West Essex, Brentwood, Havering, Barking and Dagenham and Redbridge.

Players can buy up to 20 chances a week, and can pay by direct debit, cheque or card.  Sign up today and help your local hospice whilst giving yourself the chance to be £1,000 better off. To find out more about the lottery, or to sign up, visit www.sfh.org.uk or call 01708 771433.
