Golfers on par for hospice

Golfers including firefighters have pitched in to boost hospice funds by taking part in two golf days.

Romford Fire Station’s green watch staff were joined by friends and family at a golf day they organised for us at Stapleford Abbots Golf Club on Friday 30th September, which raised over £4,000.

Then on Monday 3rd October we held our annual Autumn Golf Day, sponsored by Barry Hearn and his sports promotion company Matchroom Sport, and raised an incredible £20,000 for patient care.

Dean Brentnall, a firefighter who organised the event at Stapleford Abbots Golf Club, thanked the club Captain Colin Langley for his support and said: “Saint Francis Hospice does a fantastic job and we as a Fire Station were only too happy to support you. I lost my father to Motor Neurone Disease last year so I appreciate the work the hospice staff and volunteer do.”

The money raised could help pay for a patient to spend six days as an inpatient, receiving the specialist care they need.

Some 108 golfers enjoyed the fine weather while playing 18 holes of golf at our golf day. Event organiser Elizabeth Palfreman said: “This is the first time we have held a golf day at Abridge Golf Club and their Open qualifying course combined with the chance to play alongside Barry Hearn contributed to the great success of the day.”

She also thanked Romford Fire Station and added: “We appreciate the support from the busy firefighters at Romford Fire Station for holding this event. We depend on the continued support of organisations and individuals to help raise the money required for us to continue to provide vital care, free of charge, to local people when they need it.”

Romford's Green Watch Firefighters donate the proceeds from their golf day.
