Hospice celebrates double donations

11 January 2011

Saint Francis Hospice is celebrating after reaching its target in The Big Give campaign, which saw £5,000 worth of donations doubled by the Reed Foundation, the charitable arm of Reed Specialist Recruitment and Candis magazine.  The total that Saint Francis Hospice will receive is £11,146 including Gift Aid.

The hospice was selected as one of hundreds of charities nationwide supported by The Big Give. Supporters were asked to make a donation to the hospice via The Big Give website and they would see their donation doubled.

Marketing manager Esther Wakeman said: “We are thrilled at the amount of money we raised through this campaign, and want to say a huge thank you to everyone who got involved and supported us.  It spurred a lot of our supporters to give more knowing their donation would have twice the impact, everyone was very generous.”

One of the donors from Brentwood who wished to remain anonymous, was delighted when he heard the total. He said: “It’s an impressive amount, I think this was a great scheme and it’s just worked so well. Saint Francis Hospice is a worthy charity, they show such compassion to patients and their families at a time of great need.”

£11,146 could pay for over 200 hours of nursing care in patient’s homes, which is a service the hospice offers across Brentwood, Havering and Barking and Dagenham.

Janet Kirby is a clinical nurse specialist, and part of the team that visit patients in their homes to provide advice, support and help to manage symptoms. This service is free of charge.  She said: “This very generous donation helps towards funding our 24 hour, seven days a week service provided by the community palliative care team.

“It is a great privilege for us, especially over the Christmas and new year period to know that by offering our service, we enable patients and those close to them to spend time together at home.”
