Hospice celebrates successful bid for Department of Health funding
12 April 2010

Patients and their families receiving care from Saint Francis Hospice will benefit from enhanced facilities as we are celebrating a successful bid for Department of Health funding.
The hospice has been awarded £346,000 from a share of £40 million from the Department of Health.
Jane Sutherland, Director of Patient Services, said “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this grant, which will help us re-shape some of the remaining areas of the hospice environment that have yet to be refurbished, so that we can give patients and their families more dignity and privacy.
“The aim is to update areas such as our patient bathrooms, physiotherapy room and dining room so that patients and their relatives experience care tailored to their individual needs, in a more modern and uplifting environment.”
Fundraising Director Jane Frame, added: “This one-off grant is wonderful news as it will enable us to make improvements to key patient areas of the hospice without having to spend any of the money donated to us by our local community. With an ongoing annual running cost of more than £6.5 million, we need every penny of the general donations made by local people to ensure our hospice remains fully staffed, our patient beds remain open and our home care services continue to run at full strength and so ensure we are there with our vital care to around 4,000 local people who need it.”
The grant, which can only be spent on the Enabling Potential project, will involve bathrooms and toilets in the patient areas being updated and a resource room created to allow private discussion between patients, relatives and healthcare professionals – which is an area identified as being important in the End of Life Care Strategy.
The physiotherapy room will also be improved with new equipment, which will enable physiotherapists to support a wider range of patients and their problems.
The work will be completed by the end of March 2011 and patients, carers and medical staff have been involved in the plans. The project will compliment improvements already achieved to the inpatient rooms and day hospice thanks to a Department of Health grant awarded in 2007.
