It was best paws forward at successful dog walk

Hundreds of dogs and their owners led the way and helped boost hospice funds at our first Wags and Tails sponsored dog walk.
More than 150 dogs took part in the 3.5km walk at Ingatestone Hall, Brentwood, which is expected to raise around £5,000 for patient care. They were also treated to a display by the Ajax Dog Team, a demonstration of Rally O by the Brentwood & District Dog Training Society, and a fly ball display from TOP DOG trainers.
The Mayor of Brentwood, Cllr Joan Holmes - who has chosen the Havering-atte-Bower based hospice as one of her charities of the year - was joined by Lord Petre, Lord Lieutenant of Essex, to set the walkers on their way on Sunday 25th September.
Among the participants was Hospice Chief Executive Pam Court and her dog Thomas and hospice fundraiser Sue Wilson with her Labrador Rosie. Sue said: “It was good to take Rosie out for a walk somewhere different and see so many dogs and their owners supporting Saint Francis Hospice. I know through working at the hospice what a difference the care our medical teams provide means to local people.”
Sandra Seymour and her daughter Jadie also took part with Sandra’s sisters, and their five white Bijon Frise’s. Sandra’s husband Mark, sadly died July last year. “From February last year, Mark spent time in the hospice and we also had care from the specialist nurses in our own home,” said Sandra. “It made a huge difference, and one of the things we all noticed was that when they came, time was never an issue.”
Since then, the family have taken part in two Adidas 5k Women’s Run in Hyde Park, London, raising over £2,500 for the hospice.
Event organiser Lauren Josman said: “It was great to see such community spirit with so many people and their dogs out in the September sunshine and supporting their local hospice – Saint Francis. I’d like to thank Lord Petre for allowing us to hold the walk at Ingatestone Hall and everyone for making our first Wags and Tails walk a success. The £5,000 could enable a patient to receive eight days care as an inpatient.”
