Local couple win Christmas Grand Prize Draw

A Brentwood couple could not believe their luck when they received a phone call on Christmas Eve to tell them they had won a Mini Cooper in the Saint Francis Hospice Christmas raffle.

Les and Margaret Watt from King George’s Road, were handed the keys to their brand new chili red Mini Cooper by hospice mascot Frankie the Lion, as they collected it from Sytner in Harold Hill on Wednesday 29th December.

Margaret, 55, is a carer. She said: “I was delighted when I received the phone call, I told them they must have made a mistake. It was such a lovely surprise - my husband was literally lost for words.”

Margaret supported the charity after a close friend of hers who received care in her home from Saint Francis Hospice, sadly died 18 months ago. She has also relied on the hospice when visiting patients living with a terminal illness.

“We had one lady we were visiting, who clearly required pain relief. So we called the nursing team at the hospice, who came to see her in her home, and took all her pain away. We were then able to move her and clean her, and she was completely free from pain. I also think it’s important that the hospice helps relatives, and offers them support if they are struggling, and the bereavement counselling they offer to children is very impressive. I will continue to support Saint Francis Hospice as much as I can.”

The Christmas Grand Prize draw has raised nearly £100,000 since it was launched in October, after the Elsie Pepperell Trust once again kindly donated the first prize, the Mini Cooper. The £1 a ticket draw also provided supporters the chance to win cash prizes ranging from £50 to £1,000.

Esther Wakeman, Marketing Manager who organised the draw said: “I want to congratulate all the prize winners, and thank everyone who supported the raffle. We were delighted that the Trustees of the Elsie Pepperell Trust kindly donated our wonderful first prize once again. Thanks to them and to all of our brilliant supporters, we've had almost £100,000 raised for patient care this Christmas. In this hard economic climate it’s been really tough to raise money this year so this Grand Prize Draw will make a big difference. The money could fund the cost of over three weeks of care in patients homes, across Brentwood, Havering, Redbridge and Barking and Dagenham, just like the care Mrs Watt’s friend received.”
