Mayor leads the way at Rotary Club Walk

Walkers enjoyed a Sunday stroll in the Havering countryside while helping raise vital funds for patient care.

More than 60 people, including Havering Mayor Councillor Melvin Wallace and his wife and Consort Joan, joined Hornchurch & Upminster Rotary Club’s 17h annual walk for Saint Francis Hospice on Sunday 4th September.

The 7.5 mile walk started from Upminster and continued along the Ingrebourne Valley and into Hornchurch Country Park and walkers were treated to panoramas of the River Thames and London as well as warm weather. They also saw a variety of wild flowers and birds including kestrels and kingfishers.

Councillor Wallace, who set walkers on their way and is a supporter of the Havering-atte-Bower based hospice, said: “The hospice helps around 600 people at any one, including sending out trained staff to visit and care for terminally ill people in their own homes. The hospice needs all our support, and it’s my aim to raise enough money to purchase two vehicles for the hospice to aid its work. I can’t praise highly enough the support that Hornchurch & Upminster Rotary Club has shown by organising the walk and raising much-needed funds.”

Hornchurch & Upminster Rotary Club President George Larkey said: “The Club is delighted that the Mayor and his Consort were able to fit our walk into their busy schedule and that so many walkers turned out to support the event. It was an excellent walk and we were delighted to go through parts of Havering which we seldom see.”

Richard Palmer, Rotary Club spokesman, said: “The sponsored walk was a wonderful combination of fresh air, delightful countryside and the feel-good factor of raising money to support our major charity, Saint Francis Hospice. We hope to have raised over £4,000 for the hospice and would like to thank everyone who took part for their help in achieving this.”
