Morrisons staff take a fresh look at hospice care

After Morrisons stores raised more than £1.3 million for hospices across the UK, staff from the Beacontree store visited Saint Francis Hospice to take a fresh look at hospice care in their local community.

The visit marked the end of the supermarket’s national Charity of the Year partnership with Help the Hospices, the leading charity supporting hospice care in the UK.

The Morrisons store in Beacontree was twinned with Saint Francis Hospice for 10 months, raising more than £5,616 from collections, selling hospice merchandise and raffles, which will help to provide care and support to people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses and their families.

£5,616 could pay for over 140 hours of nursing care in patient’s own homes, or could offer 18 patients a visit to the day hospice, where they will have access to medical staff, complementary therapy, a home cooked meal and an afternoon of fun and games.

Staff from the Beacontree Morrisons store celebrated the successful partnership by attending a tour of the hospice facilities.

“Statistically around half of our customers are likely to know someone who has been cared for by a hospice,” said Linda Danbury, HR manager at the store. “Seeing the work of Saint Francis Hospice up close and meeting the patients who have benefited from our support has shown us how vital these services are to local people and has given us a fresh perspective on hospice care in our community.

“We’ve been impressed by the welcoming and caring atmosphere in the day hospice, and have been inspired to hear that hospice care can include everything from physiotherapy and care in the home to counselling and bereavement support for family members. It has been a privilege to learn how our help can make a difference to hospice patients and their families.”

Rochelle Hodds, Community Fundraiser from Saint Francis Hospice said:

“Morrisons staff and customers have embraced hospice care throughout the partnership, coming up with some extremely creative fundraising ideas which have made a big difference to people facing the end of life and to their families. We are pleased to have given Morrisons staff the chance to see the impact of their support.”

Fundraising activities included a raffle last week, offering a top prize of tickets to see Ireland play rugby in as well as in-store collections. All money raised by the store through staff fundraising will directly fund hospice services for people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses from Barking and Dagenham, as well as Havering, Redbridge and Brentwood.

David Praill, chief executive of Help the Hospices, said:
“The Charity of the Year partnership with Morrisons has been an exciting opportunity for small, local charities to benefit from a national fundraising effort. The incredible amount that has been raised by Morrisons staff and customers will help hospices across the UK to provide the best possible care to adults and children with life-limiting and terminal illnesses, as well as to their friends and families.”
