New Brentwood shop has busy opening day

Shoppers on the lookout for a bargain are in for a treat as a second Saint Francis Hospice shop has opened in Brentwood High Street.

The new shop, at 37 High Street, near Marks & Spencer, has 12,000 square feet of retail space selling good quality donated clothes, books, homeware, toys and more. It complements the hospice shop the other end of the High Street, which will now sell quality old, modern and retro furniture.

Hospice patients Lynda Pepper and Linda Bangs, both from Brentwood, and specialist nurse Chris Watkins, who visits patients in their Brentwood homes, joined the crowds outside the store, and marked its opening on Friday 20th May with a ribbon cutting. Shoppers were handed balloons and sweets.

Steve Rose, General Manager of Saint Francis Hospice (Shops) Ltd, who was also at the launch, said: “We’re pleased to have a second Saint Francis Hospice shop in Brentwood, it’s something the charity has wanted for a long time. The shop is bright and spacious and customers are not only able to pick up a bargain but can be confident their purchase will make a real contribution towards changing lives.”

Money raised from the 16 hospice shops goes towards the £7.2 million Saint Francis Hospice needs a year to provide its specialist medical care and support, free, to local people affected by life-limiting illness, including the service community nurse Chris Watkins provides. She visits the homes of patients across Brentwood, including Lynda Bangs. She visits Lynda to help with symptom control after her chemotherapy, as well as providing emotional support.

Lynda Bangs, 59 said: “Chris comes and sees me quite often, and I couldn’t do without her because if I have a down day she is always there for me, she’s somebody I can always turn to. I couldn’t do without the hospice in general; it’s made a huge difference to my life.

“I’m very pleased to see this new shop today, a lot of people have come to the opening and it looks lovely in the store. Without the shops and the support of the general public we wouldn’t be able to have the treatment and wonderful care we have from Saint Francis Hospice.”

In a new direction for the hospice the shop will be the first to currently open on a Sunday – from 10am to 4pm. It will also have a range of new jewellery on sale. The shop will also be open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

The hospice will welcome donations for both its furniture shop and this new store in Brentwood as well volunteers to help staff the stores. Volunteering is a great way of meeting new people and you can also gain retail experience, so if you have some time to spare please contact Shop Manager John Booth on 01277 220717 or head office on 01708 376269 for other stores.
