Patient's Christmas fair brings early festive cheer to Hospice
21 November 2011

A Christmas Fair organised by patient Jean Clark proved popular and has raised more than £1,200.
Shoppers were able to buy Christmas decorations, make-up, homemade cakes and jewellery at the fair, which was held at our education centre on Saturday November 19th .The money raised will be shared between us and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Jean, who suffers from motor neurone disease, has been a Hospice supporter for many years, but has become more involved since becoming a patient. She attends day hospice once a week, where she can speak to nurses and doctors, have physiotherapy or access whatever care she needs.
"Until I became a patient I never realised how much work Saint Francis Hospice does," she said. "‘I don’t think I’d be where I am today if it weren’t for the Hospice. I wanted to do the Christmas Fair following the success of a summer fundraising event in my garden and I’m pleased the Hospice helped me with a venue and support."
Jean’s husband Alan and daughter, Tracy helped her make the event such a success. Alan said: "We thought we’d go ahead with it because we’ve had so much support from our friends and neighbours from things we’ve done in the past. The rest, as they say, is history."
As well as caring for Jean, the Hospice supports her family. both Tracy and Alan have attended the Better Together carer support programme, which has enabled them to look after Jean in their home more effectively.
Also at the fair was Betty Innes, from Hainault, who was selling baking equipment, which she had donated from her career as a professional cake-maker.
Community fundraiser Rochelle Hodds said: “I was delighted to help Jean and her family organise the fair and it was great to see so many people turn-out and support their local Hospice. I would like to thank everyone who helped out, the off-licences who donated tombola prizes and Godfrey’s for providing the delicious cakes for sale.
The money raised could pay for patient’s like Jean to attend the day hospice, where they can receive the support they need and remain at home, independent."
