As a physio at the hospice, I am involved with patients and their families in a multitude of ways.
We might work on mobility issues, exploring ways to help with activities of daily living, breathlessness management and exercise. I predominantly work across our inpatient unit and the community and at all times gear treatment towards the goals of the patients - whether it is to be able to stand from a chair or walk their daughter down the aisle. We also see a wide variety of patient groups presenting complaints from neurological to respiratory conditions as well as oncology and elderly patients. Being able to help patients and their families at such a difficult time is hugely rewarding. Knowing that my input has potentially helped ease a situation, or helped the patient achieve more makes it very easy to come to work each day!
The hospice does great work for thousands of local families every year, and as a result it’s impact is felt on a very personal level for many people whom I know. It’s an honour to carry out my work for such an incredible charity.
