I was drawn to palliative medicine due to the holistic vision, the close knit team dynamic and the tremendous difference that can be made by palliative care teams for patients and families.
Personally I believe that the time of death and dying is an extremely important time for patients and families. I see firsthand that how it is dealt with has lasting consequences for all those involved.
In my practice, as much as possible, I work to offer patient choice, improve quality of life, and deliver good symptom management. In addition, a good death to me is one where patient and families know what is going on and are given the space to talk to each other openly about it. Although this is heartbreaking, it is an opportunity for everyone to learn about this natural time of life which is normally so hidden from public view in our time and place.
