Surveyor trades tools for trainers as he prepares for iconic race
It may have started off as a joke, but Danny Stokes has been in full training mode for the London Marathon since the New Year and a recent visit to the hospice has spurred him on!
Danny, 30, who is a Surveyor with NC Construction Ltd - one of the charity's corporate partners - put himself forward to run the 26.2mile course around the country's capital, never expecting to be lucky enough to get a place!
"One Friday we were talking about what event everyone could do to raise money for Saint Francis Hospice and I said, put me down for the London Marathon," said Danny, from Hornchurch.
"I never really thought I'd get one of the charity's Gold places as they are so hard to come by!" Living in Hornchurch, Danny has always known of the hospice and last year his friend Alan Daly ran the iconic race in memory of his dad who was cared for by the charity.
And when Danny visited to donate Xmas hampers to the fundraising team in December he had the chance to find out more about the valuable services it provides to people affected by life limiting illnesses.
"After being at the hospice and learning more about it, it really hit home and it gave me even more willingness to do it," said Danny, who was also among the team from the company's Hornchurch Head Office who took part in a three-mile assault course for the hospice on 19th January 2018 Training is well under way and Danny is building up the miles in preparation for the big day on Sunday, 22nd April 22.
"I have been doing my research and started running before Christmas and I'm now stepping it up," he said.
"I am really excited about the day! "It will also be a huge personal achievement for me and I know my friends, family and colleagues will all be there to support me."
