While studying biology, chemistry, psychology and sociology at sixth form; I am incredibly fortunate to volunteer as a receptionist on the weekends.

Dinner-time conversations always feature the Hospice with a mother who works on the ward as a health care assistant, and that’s what drove me to get involved myself!

She began as a volunteer during the first lockdown after my great-aunt, who has been a nurse here for almost 20 years, mentioned the need for volunteers.

It was incredibly moving to see the community come together to support the hospice and for myself, to see first-hand how volunteering is just the start of the hospice.

Volunteering on reception

At 17, I’m not old enough to volunteer as a Ward Helper but can still contribute at reception with my mum twice a month.

I believe it’s all about being the first person you see coming into the Hospice- a friendly approachable face, letting people open up about what they’re going through if they choose to and directing them through to the ward. The best part of my role is contributing to such a compassionate and caring environment.

I think some people are put off by the misconceptions surrounding palliative care, and don’t know exactly what they are getting themselves into.

Hospice care is about enhancing the quality of life for people under our care

Volunteering has shattered those misconceptions for me. It’s not just about end-of-life care; it’s about enhancing the quality of life for people and their families, providing comfort, support, and dignity during the most challenging times.

Volunteering has enriched my life

Reflecting on my experience so far, I can confidently say that volunteering has enriched my life in ways I never imagined. It has taught me the power of compassion, resilience, and the importance of human connection.

These are lessons that will stay with me for a lifetime, shaping not only my personal growth but also influencing my future endeavours in healthcare. I strongly encourage everyone to get into volunteering, no matter their age.

Spending time away from homework and the stresses of school to focus on giving back is incredibly meaningful and rewarding. Signing up is easy as applying on the website. Volunteering isn’t giving up your time, it’s simply a better use of it!
