Who we are

Saint Francis Hospice is an independent charity and one of the largest adult hospices in the UK.  We serve the population of Brentwood, Havering, Barking & Dagenham and Redbridge – around one million people.  In special circumstances we occasionally take patients from outside of these areas.

We are a large hospice but our focus is on care of the individual, their family and their carers.  Here are some facts and figures that show the scope of our work:

  • We were founded over 25 years ago
  • We employ more than 200 staff (an equivalent of 160 full time roles)
  • Approximately 800 volunteers help us provide our services to the local community.
  • We work with five Primary Care Trusts (NHS).
  • Our education centre provides training for healthcare professionals –  including doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants – and carers; many  courses are organised in conjunction with London Southbank University.

All the services we provide are free of charge to patients and their families. We are supported by the NHS, which contributes just over 30% of our total annual running cost of £7.2 million, but as a registered charity we gain enormous support from our local community, generating almost two thirds of our running costs through donations.  Without this generosity it would not be possible to continue our work.
