Dogs and their owners lead the way in first Woofs and Wellies walk
27 April 2010

Hundreds of dogs and their owners enjoyed the sunshine while going for ‘walkies’ in aid of the hospice.
Some 450 people and 350 dogs of all sizes and breeds joined the first Woofs and Wellies sponsored dog walk at Hainault Forest on April 18th and it is hoped they have raised around £10,000 for patient care.
Among the people who took part was Dorota and Magda Ogilwy, who took their two dogs Ruby and Poppy along. The teacher said: “The walk was good fun and very rewarding. I’ve always been impressed with the work of Saint Francis Hospice and the care it provides to families and individuals facing the challenges of a life limiting illness so when I found out about the dog walk I thought I’d get involved.”
Lesley Burrows, her family and dog Darcey also took part with seven-year-old Toby Smith, and his parents and dog Bill.
Lesley manages our team of clinical nurse specialists who visit patients and families in their homes and assess their condition and needs, answer questions and advise their GP and healthcare professionals about their care and medication. She said: “It was a fantastic way to spend a sunny morning. The atmosphere was great and the children loved it. It was a great opportunity for them to understand how they can help the hospice by taking part in a fun event. Even though I work at the hospice and know the difference our care makes it was wonderful to hear people speaking so positively about helping the hospice.
“Darcey is wearing her tag medal with pride and we’ll certainly take part next year.”
Event organiser Lauren Josman, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people bring their dogs out to enjoy the sunshine and countryside and support the hospice and I’d like to thank everyone for making the first Woofs and Wellies walk a success. The dogs truly deserved their medals and we hope to hold the walk again next year.”
