Time for Walkies - MP helps launch sponsored dog walk

Romford MP Andrew Rosindell and his Staffordshire Bull Terrier Buster paid Saint Francis Hospice a visit to join staff and their dogs in launching a new fundraising event, a sponsored dog walk.

The Woofs and Wellies 5km walk will take place on Sunday April 18th and Saint Francis Hospice is looking for as many dogs and their owners to join in the fun of this first sponsored dog walk.

Mr Rosindell, an animal lover and hospice supporter, visited the hospice with his five-year-old dog on Friday February 5th to help launch the new fundraising initiative and said: “I think the walk is a terrific idea because dog is man’s best friend and the hospice cares for people and their families. It’s good to see the two coming together to raise money for patient care.”

Event organiser Lauren Josman said: “People form great friendships with their dogs and it’s that connection that inspired me to organise this walk. It promises to be an enjoyable day out in the forest, meeting other dog owners while raising much-needed funds so we can provide specialist care, free of charge, to people affected by life-limiting illness when they need it.

This is the first sponsored dog walk we have organised and are hoping for plenty of support from our local community.”

Nurse Claire, who joined Mr Rosindell with her long-haired Jack Russell dog Bradley and plans to attend the walk, said: “Dogs bring comfort to patients in the day hospice and on the ward. When people are unwell they often feel isolated, but when visited by the PAT dogs and they get comfort and relaxation from stroking them and often open up.”

The morning walk will take place at Hainault Forest, near Lambourne End. Places are £5 per person, registration in advance, and each dog will receive a medal and goody bag.
