Caroline Scates - Head of Education

Caroline Scates has been nursing for over twenty years. Following her training at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, she joined Saint Francis Hospice and subsequently studied with Dundee University to obtain her Bachelor of Nursing (Palliative Care). Once entering Palliative Care education she studied for the Post Graduate Certificate in Education and is now Head of the Education department. She particularly enjoys teaching palliative care ethics and when not at work enjoys spending time with her family and dog walking!

 

Denise Douglas - Lecturer

Denise Douglas has been nursing for over thirty years. Trained in the Princess Mary’s Royal Air force Nursing Service and has since worked in NHS hospitals, Primary care as a District Nurse and in the Independent sector as Clinical Nurse Specialist in HIV/AIDS both in UK and in Uganda as the International training officer. Prior to coming to Saint Francis Hospice three years ago, Denise worked as a Ward Sister in another Hospice. She was awarded a Bachelor of Nursing (Palliative Care) with Dundee University and  has recently been awarded the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Essex.

She enjoys teaching all End of Life  care issues and in particular Spirituality in Palliative Care.

When not at work Denise is a Trustee for a  palliative care charity Hospice23 which aims to support all people working in Palliative Care,  Officer in Girls Brigade and a worship leader in her church.

 

Des Nolan MSc RNT DipNEd RCNT RGN - Lecturer in Palliative Care

Des joined the Education Department in July 2008. He has considerable teaching experience in undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Nursing and the provision of Palliative Care Education. He has contributed to the development of Palliative Care programmes at Diploma and Degree level at St Christopher’s Hospice, Kings College London and London South Bank University in his capacity as Programme Lead. He also has an interest in the development of learning on line, supporting staff through clinical supervision and furthering advanced communications skills necessary for successful health care delivery. 

Mary O'Sullivan - Bsc Honours, RGN, DN cert – Lecturer/practioner

Mary has worked at St Francis Hospice for 19 years as a community palliative care clinical nurse specialist. She trained at St. George’s Hospital in London, worked in ITU and was a district nurse for a number of years. She teaches on the degree BSc palliative care modules. Mary has an interest in teaching communication skills and is a national accredited facilitator to teach the Connected, National Advanced Communication Skills training programme.

 

Anne Macleod

Anne has been nursing for over thirty years, the last twenty in palliative care. She trained in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and has worked in NHS hospitals in Scotland and England. Anne then worked in St Elizabeth's hospice in Ipswich for 18years as staff nurse and team leader. She also undertook secondments with hospice @ home and hospital palliative care teams. Anne has since undertaken a nursing degree and a palliative care degree by distance learning. She has a passion for palliative and end of life care with a special interest in drug administration and when not at work loves to read, keep fit, garden and do housework.
