Double lottery success for Upminster residents

Upminster proved to be a lucky town with two residents sharing £7,000 in lottery prizes.

Allan Taylor scooped the £6,000 rollover on the Saint Francis Hospice lottery and Jan Derrick won the £1,000 weekly jackpot.

Allan, 75, signed up to the fundraising initiative to support the charity and never thought any more about it.... until he received a call with the exciting news.

"I was really shocked and very happy about it," said the retired surveyor who lives with his wife Janet. (Pictured with Allan).

"We visited our neighbour at the hospice before she died a few years ago and know about the good work Saint Francis Hospice does.

"My mum and my sister died of cancer and you never know if you will need a hospice in the future."

Janet, 71, added, "We feel lucky to win as £6,000 is a nice sum of money.

"You have very little chance of winning the National Lottery but with the hospice lottery you actually do have a good chance of winning."

Janet and Allan will be sharing their good fortune with their three daughters and five grandchildren as well as enjoying the winter sun as they head off on a cruise around the Canary Islands.

"We were thinking about going on a cruise but after winning the rollover we went ahead and booked it," said Allan.

And education Secretary Jan was delighted she bought a single lottery ticket when she turned up for work at the hospice's Pepperell Education Centre where she works on Thursday.

"It's fantastic," she said. "When I was queuing up to get my ticket someone joked that it was a shame that he had the winning ticket. I replied, you never know, never thinking I would actually win."

David Holmes, Data and Direct Marketing Manager at Saint Francis Hospice said: "Thanks to our regular players like Allan and Jan that the lottery raises hundreds of thousands of pounds to help fund our nurses and doctors. Each number in the weekly Saint Francis Hospice lottery costs £1 and you can have up to 20 numbers.

In addition to the guaranteed weekly first prize of £1,000, 10 lucky winners each get £10 and there is a rollover second prize of £1,000 in the draw to be made on February 19th. Last year a lucky woman from Brentwood won £24,500 on our rollover! You can sign up to the hospice lottery online or call 01708 771433."
