So he was thrilled when he discovered he had won the £1,000 jackpot in the Saint Francis Hospice lottery.

"It's a real pleasure to win something and to know that by playing the lottery I am helping to support the hospice as it does such good work," said Ralph, 81, from Hornchurch.

Ralph, who worked for London Transport and was based at North Street, Romford, also shops regularly in the hospice's charity shops and says he has picked up lots of bargains over the years.

David Holmes, Head of Individual Giving at Saint Francis Hospice said: "Thanks to our regular players like Ralph that the lottery raises hundreds of thousands of pounds to help fund our nurses and doctors.

Each number in the weekly Saint Francis Hospice lottery costs £1 and you can have up to 20 numbers.                                                                                             Ralph Pearse

In addition to the guaranteed weekly first prize of £1,000, 10 lucky winners each get £10 and there is a rollover second prize of £2,000 in the draw to be made on November 11.

Last year a lucky woman from Brentwood won £24,500 on our rollover! You can sign up to the hospice lottery online at www.sfh.org.uk or call 01708 771433."
