Woman celebrates birthday with 10k Star Walk!
It will be a double celebration for Amy Saunders when she steps out to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our Star Walk as it also coincides with her birthday.
But taking part in the 10k walk around Romford town centre on Saturday, September 22 is more than just a night out to Amy and her friends, as they will be raising money to help patients and their families who may need our specialist end of life care services - just as their loved ones did.
In 2009 the Hospice cared for Amy's mum before she died and regularly attended its day services where she was supported by nurses and doctors.
She also met fellow patients and enjoyed taking part in its art therapy sessions.
"I think it is necessary to give back to the people who supported us and to help other people who are going through it as well to realise they are not alone as so many people have gone through or are going through the same thing," said Amy.
"My mum used to visit the day services on a Wednesday an
d she made so many things for us, including cards, which I still take out every Christmas.
"She got to meet and talk to other people who were her age and who had children.
"My mum was given massages and therapies by the complementary therapy team and she really looked forward to it.

"And my sisters and I also received a lot of support from one of its bereavement counsellors who visited us at home and helped us as a family as well as individually.
"I was 19 at the time but my youngest sister was only 10 and I do not think she would have been able to deal with losing our mum without the support she was given."
Amy has taken part in the Star Walk in the past but this year will be extra special.
"I am really looking forward to it as it is such a nice opportunity to get everyone together and support such a great cause that is so close to so many of our hearts," said Amy, whose family also attend the hospice's annual Light Up a Life events at Christmas.
"The Star Walk is the day after my birthday so we are doing it as part of my birthday celebrations as well."
This year men are being invited along to join in the fun for the first time and the charity is hoping couples, families, friends and colleagues will come along and support the event.
Check-in opens at 9pm and their will be entertainment to get the party started and a warm up before walkers set off at 10pm, starting and finishing at The Liberty Centre.
And everyone who completes the route will be presented with their well-earned medal!
