The YJS Trust's £100,000 contribution to hospice care

Experiencing the difference hospice care can make to patients and families has inspired a Trust to donate £100,000 so more people can benefit from its specialist services.

The Yvonne Jean Stewart Trust was set up by Nina Anderson and her brothers Daniel and Alex Stewart in memory of their mum Yvonne Stewart, who died of cancer in 2003, to raise money for worthy causes.

And when Nina's brother-in-law Gary Anderson was admitted to the Inpatient Unit at Saint Francis Hospice in 2014, the family were so impressed by the compassion and support he received, they wanted to get involved.

As last February was a leap year the Trust donated £21,000 to cover the costs of care for the extra day and in September it hosted a glitzy ball, in partnership with the hospice, which raised £40,000.

The Trust then surprised the charity by announcing it would bring the donation up to £100,000, funding two Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) for a year - one in Brentwood and one in Dagenham.

And on Tuesday (March 14th), the Trust's trustees visited the hospice to find out more about how the nurses, who are experts in palliative care, support patients and their families, along with health care professionals, in the community.

Speaking on behalf of the Trust, Nina said: "This is all part of the legacy that we want to carry on in memory of our mum and Gary.

"We couldn't have achieved what we have achieved without the continued commitment from our supporters, and for that we are massively thankful.

"Our motto to our supporters has always been 'you have helped us help someone with cancer' and this sentiment is no truer than with the donation we have been able to give to fund the two YJS nurses with Saint Francis Hospice."

Anne Brown, Head of Fundraising at the hospice, added: "Our nurses are at the heart of what we do, and this incredible gift from The YJS Trust will impact hundreds of families over the next twelve months as our Clinical Nurse Specialists support our patients and their loved ones through the most difficult time imaginable.

"We are overwhelmed by the generosity of The YJS Trust, and feel privileged to work in partnership with them as we serve our community together."
