Runner's bid to be a Lion king record holder

An ambitious IT Technician hopes his bid to break the Guinness World of Record for fastest mascot to complete a marathon will be a roaring success when he dons a lion costume for the London Marathon.

Frazer Robertson, from Hainault, plans to dress as Saint Francis Hospice mascot Frankie the Lion as he is running for the charity, when he takes part in the London Marathon on Sunday 26th April.

If he is to beat the record he will need to complete the marathon in less than 3hours 51mins, something Frazer believes is achievable as he has experienced running in seven marathons, including one London Marathon dressed as a bottle, which he finished in four hours 17mins.

Frazer said: "When I was lucky enough to secure a place in the London Marathon as part of the hospice team I thought I'd set myself an extra challenge to complete the run dressed as a mascot - it should help raise some funds and awareness for the charity."

The keen runner explained that he is supporting Saint Francis Hospice after a friend, who volunteers for the charity told him about the services it provides to people affected by cancer or other life-limiting illness. He said: "After learning about the hospice I decided it was a charity I was keen to support as it provided care to people local to me and at a time they most need it. It's an honour to run for the hospice. Running the marathon while dressed as a mascot will be nothing compared to the challenges the patients and their relatives face."

Training is going well and Frazer is up to around 18 miles. He goes running about three times a week and cycling twice a week and now plans to start training in the mascot costume so don't worry if you spot a lion on the loose!

Katy Woodgate, the hospice's Acting Events and Community Manager, said: "We value Frazer's drive and commitment in using the marathon as an opportunity to challenge himself and help raise as much awareness and funds as he can for the hospice. Saint Francis Hospice takes great pride in its team of runners and supporters and wishes them all the best with their training and the run. The money raised enables the hospice to continue providing its vital services, free of charge, to people in our community who need them."

So far 32 people are taking part in the London Marathon for the hospice and we would love to welcome more runners to join our team.
