Above and beyond awards

Nominate your colleagues from across the Hospice who have gone above and beyond in their role.

Rewarding and recognising our staff

Above and Beyond is the Saint Francis Hospice staff recognition programme.

Our award scheme aims to reward and recognise individuals and teams within the organisation who go above and beyond their job role. Born from feedback collected in a staff survey, this is a way of boosting morale and saying thank you for the extra work we do.

How to make a nomination

All you need to do is fill out the nomination form at the bottom of this page  for their chance to receive a certificate recognising their hard work and dedication. Once all the nominations have been received by the quarterly deadline, detailed on the website, a winner will be chosen within each of the three categories of 'support', 'fairness' and 'honesty'. Each winner will receive a certificate, pin badge and a small gift.

We are open and transparent and value each person's individuality. We respect everyone and value diversity. We believe our different experiences and knowledge make us stronger. Together we achieve more.

Values - professional

Professional

We are experienced in what we do as a hospice and as a charity. We encourage everyone to give of their best, in providing the appropriate care and expertise to those who need us and support us.

Values - always learning

Always learning

We are open and outward looking, always ready to adapt and change, looking for better ways of doing things, by learning from each other and from the ever changing world around us.

What do our values mean?

The hospice looks for a person to be selfless; who helps and empowers others, inspiring people to be successful. Have they done something well, which they found difficult or that no one else would do?

They need to be aware of other peoples' needs, whether that is a staff member, volunteer, patient, patients' family or visitor. The individual must be able to accept the views, thoughts and feelings of others - even if they don't agree with them.

They will stand up for what they believe in and do it in a respectful way. The person will ensure that any feedback they give to someone will be done in a kind, sensitive and supportive manner. They will promote openness; and take responsibility for a mistake, learning and sharing what has been learnt.

Our Values mirror a person who is positive and passionate about their role, those around them and our organisation.

Meet our winners

The nurses on IPU were recently awarded with an Above and Beyond Award, for helping to support SCCS with their calls overnight.

Jane Elmer, who made the nomination, said, "For a long time, SCCS were struggling with supporting telephone calls coming through the night via work mobile and having to work and perform the next day.

"Following a consultation, it was agreed that we run a pilot for the night nurses being the first contact for patients and health care professionals.

"Since its inception May 2021, the night staff nurses have not only taken on something new but have done so with compassion, empathy and confidence. This may seem a small matter but it has meant the CNSs acquired more sleep during the night to carry out duties to the full the following day.

"I would like to thank all of them for the way in which they have supported this. I can think of no better way to show appreciation of this and say a massive thank you than nominate this special team of nurses."

What makes a good nomination?

A good nomination is one that uses strong examples of where your colleague has gone above and beyond as has displayed the Hospice values.

If you simply say they are very helpful, good at their job, or nice to work with, whilst that is great to hear it sadly will not what make them an Above & Beyond winner.

Examples of good nominations

"Each and every day, Sarah comes in to work with a huge smile on her face, despite the fact we know that she has a lot going on at home. She's always the first to volunteer to help a colleague and one recent example includes stepping in to cover someone who suffered a bereavement. Sarah cancelled her annual leave, and for 2 weeks, managed both jobs to ensure the care provided to our patients didn't suffer. This is just one example of how Sarah puts her work and colleagues before her own needs all the time."

"Philomena has given so much to our department, in between her full time job, by attending numerous fundraising events each year in a voluntary capacity, doing different jobs for us, as well as participating too! Always smiling and helping our supporters enjoy the events; and helping to raise funds as well. Philomena doesn't limit her help to a local event, she has travelled miles away from our catchment area to help out, all at her own expense and when it was difficult to get others to be able to attend."

"Our patient was dying and his wife's birthday was due and so was their anniversary; and their two children had learning disabilities. Dr Matthew personally bought a small gift for the wife, which touched her greatly as she realised how someone had thought about her at that difficult time."

Examples of poor nominations

"Sarah is lovely to work with and comes in with a good attitude every day. She supports me to do my job."

"Godfrey is helpful and nothing is too much trouble; and if he doesn't know the answer he will find someone who does."

"Thomas worked through his lunch break to help finish an important task that had a tight deadline. This has happened on a few occasions."
