Celebrating World Reflexology Week at Saint Francis Hospice

21-27 September 2026
This World Reflexology Week, we're celebrating the wonderful work of our complementary therapies team and the moments of relaxation, comfort and wellbeing they create for individuals under our care.
At Saint Francis Hospice, we know that good care is about helping people manage their symptoms while also supporting their overall wellbeing. Complementary therapies such as reflexology can offer those in our care a chance to relax, feel supported and enjoy moments that are just for them.
Reflexology is a gentle treatment where pressure is applied to different points on the feet or hands.
"Reflexology is about creating a calm, comfortable space where those we support can take some time away from everything else that's going on," said Sharon Williams, who is a complementary therapist with our therapies team.
“For some individuals, reflexology can also be a helpful way to ease symptoms such as pain, anxiety, constipation, nausea and insomnia, which can sometimes feel worse when someone is stressed or tense. By helping people feel more relaxed, regular treatments may support their overall wellbeing alongside the medication and other care they receive.”
One individual shared that they experienced improved sensation in their feet and toes after having regular reflexology treatments. Another person, who had been experiencing persistent hiccups for months, found that their hiccups stopped while receiving reflexology.
Matthew, who is currently receiving care on our ward finds that reflexology provides a welcome opportunity to escape the stresses of everyday life:
"It takes all the stress out of you, and you can calm down, relax and it's so soothing. The difference it makes to me is that you forget about all your pain. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone."
