Young Adult Group - A Special Visit from Rocky's Animals

Our Young Adult Group, which brings together young people living with lifelong conditions, meets every third Wednesday of the month. In partnership with Richard House and Haven House, the group provides a welcoming space to connect, share, and enjoy new experiences.
This month, we were delighted to welcome back Rocky’s Animals, always a highlight for everyone involved. From the moment the goats and sheep arrived, and their gentle calls echoed across the gardens, there was a sense of excitement and wonder. Inside, a whole host of creatures awaited: rabbits, guinea pigs, snakes, geckos, spiders, and more.
Rocky, as ever, was fantastic, caring, knowledgeable, and deeply respectful. His passion for animals and understanding of our young adults created a calm and joyful atmosphere. He took time with each person, making sure they felt comfortable and engaged.
One particularly heartwarming moment came from Jess, who recently turned 18. She has a special bond with the gecko and loves to talk to it as if they’ve known each other for years. Watching her light up during their ‘conversation’ was a beautiful reminder of how much these visits mean.
The presence of animals even reached those not in the room – people passing by could hear the bleats and calls from outside and were drawn in with curiosity: “Was that a goat?” It brought a buzz to the hospice, a moment of shared joy and surprise. Rocky went onto the ward and spent time with the staff, individuals and their loved ones.
Rocky generously stayed longer to learn more about our young adults and the care we provide. We’re so grateful to him and to everyone who helps make these sessions happen, they leave lasting impressions, lift spirits, and remind us all the power of simple, joyful moments.
