Saint Francis Hospice appoints contractor to lead £2m Ward Development Project

Saint Francis Hospice has appointed a contractor to lead a £2m Ward Development Project so that individuals receiving care and their loved ones continue to receive the best palliative and end of life care experience they deserve.
“The Ward Development Project is vital to ensure our care environment continues to meet the needs of everyone we care for, and to maintain safe care provision and quality of services to people in our community for the next 5 years,” said Steve McClure, Project Lead at Saint Francis Hospice.
Following a rigorous and competitive tender process, Thornwood Design & Build has been appointed to deliver the two-phase refurbishment of our ward at Havering-atte-Bower.
The project, which is due for completion by March 2026, will be financed by government capital funds, alongside generous donations from our supporters and hospice reserves.
It will feature significant improvements that will benefit the people we care for, the loved ones the hospice supports at the most difficult times, and ensure the hospice team has the environment it needs to deliver outstanding hospice care.
The key benefits of the Ward Development Project include enhancing the experience for people under our care and their loved ones through modernised, comfortable surroundings and improved facilities, including new showers and updated bathrooms, hoists, furnishings, TVs, lighting and flooring.
There will be new spaces such as a therapy room and a quiet room for loved ones and energy efficiency upgrades, including the installation of solar panels.
The lounge and entrance will also be redesigned to create a more welcoming and functional space.
Thomas Burton, Managing Director of Thornwood Design & Build, said:
“Thornwood Design & Build is proud to have been appointed to deliver the two-phase ward refurbishment at Saint Francis Hospice in Havering-atte-Bower, following a competitive tender.
“Our experience in delivering intricate healthcare projects, combined with a genuine understanding of the hospice’s needs, has led to an exciting partnership with a truly respected organisation.
“We look forward to working closely with the brilliant team at Saint Francis Hospice to deliver a high-quality scheme that will enhance patient experience and benefit the local community for many years to come.”
Construction is expected to begin in September. During this time bed availability on the ward will temporarily be reduced from 18 to 11, with the 7 beds moving to our enhanced Hospice at Home service. This has been carefully planned, and staffing will be adjusted to ensure continuity, quality and safety of care.
“At Saint Francis Hospice, we are always looking to the future—ensuring that our facilities, people, and services continue to meet the needs of the people under our care and our community,” said Mr McClure.
“This project is a clear statement of Saint Francis Hospice’s commitment to the best end of life care for all. We look forward to sharing regular updates and, ultimately, welcoming people and their loved ones into a refreshed, modern ward that reflects the quality and compassion at the heart of everything we do.”
