When Gaynor and Graham got married in October, they asked family and friends to make a donation to Saint Francis Hospice instead of gifts. This kind gesture raised almost £4,000 in memory of Gaynor’s beloved mum Shirley Ann Fisher.

Our wedding day at The Fennes in Bocking was everything we had hoped for. It was magical, full of love, and we were surrounded by family and friends. The sweeping staircase, beautiful gardens, and having our three daughters by our side made it unforgettable. What made it even more special was sharing the day with our elderly parents: my dad Peter, 89, and Graham’s mum Margaret, who had just celebrated her 90th birthday.

Of course, there was one person missing, my mum. I truly believe she was looking down on us that day, and that thought gave me so much comfort. When Graham and I decided to ask for donations instead of gifts, it was our way of keeping her memory alive and supporting the hospice that helped us so much.

Sadly, Mum was diagnosed with liver cancer quite late, and in March 2010 we were told she only had months, maybe weeks, to live. It was devastating. During those months, we did everything we could to care for her at home, and that’s when we were introduced to Saint Francis Hospice. Their care was incredible. Mum had a few short visits, and those moments meant everything, from having her hair done, to chatting with people who understood, and joining in activities. For those times, she felt like herself again.

Saint Francis Hospice isn’t just about medical care; it’s about dignity, compassion, and making every moment count. After Mum passed away, their support continued. I joined weekly counselling groups, which became a lifeline for me. My daughters, then 9 and 11, were offered counselling and art workshops. They still treasure the picture they drew of memories of Nanny Shirley, a beautiful reminder we’ll always keep.

Thanks to the generosity of our loved ones, we raised £3,983.75 on our wedding day. Knowing this will help other families like ours means the world. We will be forever grateful to Saint Francis Hospice for everything they did for Mum and for us.
